Remittances getting speedy increase

Remittances from expatriates, one of the main sources of earning dollars, have suffered. In the first 14 days of this month of March, 99.55 million USD remittances have arrived in the country. Its amount in Bangladeshi currency (as one dollar equals 108 taka) is 10 thousand 801 crore 17 lakh taka.

This information was revealed in the updated report of Bangladesh Bank on Sunday (July 16).

According to the data of the central bank, in the current two weeks of July, an average of 7.1 million dollars remittances have arrived. In local currency which is more than Tk. 771 crore. If this trend continues, it will exceed 2 billion dollars by the end of the month.

In the first 14 days of this month, 12 crore 72 lakh dollars were received through state-owned banks and 3 crore 94 lakh dollars through specialized banks. Besides, 82 crore 52 lakh dollars came through private banks. And 36 lakh 90 thousand dollars came through foreign sector banks.

Earlier in June, expatriates sent remittances of 219 crore 90 lakh dollars. Which is the highest in the last 3 years. The last record came in July 2020 at 259 crore 82 lakh dollars.

An official of the relevant department of Bangladesh Bank said that many Bangladeshis have gone abroad recently. They are sending remittances legally. Expatriates are choosing this banking channel as it is safe. As a result, expatriate income is increasing.

However, no remittance has come through 9 banks till date. These include the state-owned Bangladesh Development Bank and the specialized Rajshahi Agricultural Development Bank.

Among the private banks are - Bengal Commercial Bank, Community Bank and Citizens Bank. And the list of foreign banks includes - Habib Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, State Bank of India and Uri Bank.
