State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu has assured the public that prices of daily commodities will remain stable during the upcoming Ramadan.
"We have discussed with importers and producers across the country to ensure price stability," said the state minister.
"The tariffs on sugar, oil, and dates are high, but we want to bring them down at a reasonable level. Hence, a proposal has been forwarded to the NBR to adjust these tariffs. An announcement regarding this matter is expected next week," Ahsanul Islam added.
The state minister was addressing queries from reporters during a view exchange meeting with local leaders at his residence of Deldual in Tangail on Friday (January 26).
Plans are underway to import 20 thousand metric tons of onions and 50 thousand metric tons of sugar from India to help regulate prices. Furthermore, imports of oil and sugar from various countries, including Brazil, are also in progress, said Ahsanul Islam Titu.
“We discussed with various stakeholders, including importers, local producers, and departments such as agriculture, food, fisheries, and animal resources. They said that they have ample stock to meet the demands of Ramadan, as well as for the following three months," he added.
