Eminent Indian sub-continental singer Lata Mungeshkar has died. The legendary artist died at the age of 92. She breathed her last on Sunday (February 6) morning.
Lata Mungeshkar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on January 8 after contracting coronavirus and pneumonia. From Saturday her physical condition began to deteriorate. She was then taken on ventilation. The famous musician of India crossed the road without returning from there.
Lata Mungeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh to classical music personality and theater artist Pandit Dinnath Mungeshkar and Shevanti. She started working as a professional vocalist in 1942 at the age of 13. He first played in a Marathi film. In 1948, she sang her first song in Hindi film Majbur.
She sang in more than 35 Indian languages. For more than 73 years, Lata Mungeshkar has captivated audiences with her magical voice.
From 1974 to 1991, she was named in the Guinness Book of World Records for recording the most songs in the world. During this time she sang more than 25,000 songs in 20 languages. Of these, more than 200 Bengali songs have been sung by Lata Mungeshkar.
Lata Mungeshkar received numerous awards including Bharat Ratna, Padma Bhushan and Padma Bibhushan. She received Dada Saheb Phalke Award, National Film Award three times, Film fare Best Female Playback four times, Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993 and Film fare Special Award twice in 1994 and 2004. Besides, 12 times Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award.
Upon receiving the news of Lata Mungeshkar's death, eminent personalities from various quarters including the cultural arena have expressed their grief and shock. Everyone is saying that this is the end of an era in the world of Indian music. This loss is irreparable.
