BJP MP Actress Roopa Ganguly’s son was arrested on Friday after he rammed his car into the wall of an upscale south Kolkata club, with many having a near escape from being hit.
The incident took place late on Thursday night when Akash Mukhopadhyay, while taking a turn, rammed his black sedan into the wall of the club in the posh Golf Garden area, police sources told PTI.
Locals claimed many people had a narrow escape as the vehicle was being driven at a breakneck speed. While the car crashed into the boundary wall, breaking a portion of it, the driver was trapped inside.
No one was injured in the incident as several people present at the spot scampered to safety on time, eyewitnesses said.
Akash’s father, who rushed out of their apartment nearby on hearing the commotion, came to his son’s rescue and helped him out of the car. The BJP MP’s son was then taken to the Jadavpur police station by cops, as the locals alleged that he was driving in an inebriated condition.
This morning, Mukhopadhyay was arrested under Sections 427 (mischief) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act besides the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
Meanwhile, in a tweet, Ganguly said the law should take its own course.
