The health condition of former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee continues to remain ‘critical’ as he is still on ventilator support following a brain surgery, hospital authorities said in a statement on Wednesday(August 12).

Mukherjee, 84, has been admitted to Army Hospital Research and Referral in the national capital on Monday where he was operated upon for removal of a blood clot in the brain on Monday. He was also diagnosed positive for coronavirous.

“Sri Pranab Mukherjee’s health condition continues to remain critical. Presently, he is haemodynamically stable and on a ventilator,” the army hospital said in its latest statement on update of Mukherjee’s health condition this afternoon.

“The former president’s condition worsened last night and not showed any improvement. And thus, he remains on ventilator support,” said the hospital in its previous statement on Tuesday night.

Besides, Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of Pranab Mukherjee and a leader of India’s National Congress, today tweeted that her “father’s health remains critical and is in hospital”.

Sharmistha recalled the day her father received the country’s highest civilian award – the Bharat Ratna – last August and also thanked all those who wished her father a speedy recovery.

“Last year August 8 was one of the happiest days for me as my dad received Bharat Ratna. Exactly a year later, on August 10, he fell critically ill,” she tweeted.

“May God do whatever is best for him and give me strength to accept both joys and sorrows of life with equanimity. I sincerely thank all for their concerns,” Sharmistha wrote on Twitter this morning.

The Bharat Ratna award ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 8 last year was attended by top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Minutes after the news of Mukherjee’s hospitalization, wishes poured in from various quarters for his early recovery and a number of leaders sent their wishes on Twitter.

President Ram Nath Kovind also spoke to Sharmistha and enquired about his health on Monday evening, media reports said.
