India accords permission to Biotech to produce ‘Covaccin’

Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has given license to India Biotech to produce Covaccin.

The DCGI was asked to submit information on safety, efficacy and immunity obtained from the first, second and third clinical trials of India Biotech.

Earlier on Sunday (January 3) morning, the DCGI approved the emergency controlled use of Corona vaccine covaccin made by Bharat Biotech and Covishield made by Oxford-AstraZeneca. The company then allowed India Biotech to license the production of covaccin.

India Biotech is a Hyderabad based company in India. They have developed a vaccine called 'Covaccin' in local method.

The Seram Institute is a Pune-based institution. They are one of the partners in the Oxford-AstraZeneca Corona Vaccine Project. The Seram Institute has produced this vaccine in India under the name 'Covishield'.

In addition, the country's expert panel is reviewing the application for approval of the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine in India.
