Myanmar's military has vowed to step down after a fair, credible and free election.
This was announced on Monday (February 1) by the country's army chief General Ming Aung Hlaing.
"We will achieve true multi-party democracy with full balance and justice," the military said in a statement on its official Facebook page.
It added that the transfer of power would take place after a free and fair general election and the expiration of the state of emergency.
The military junta claims that Aung San Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), won 83 percent of the seats in the November 8 election. But there was extensive manipulation in the election. The military did not accept the results of that vote. They filed a complaint in the Supreme Court against the country's president and the head of the Election Commission.
On Monday morning, the Myanmar army declared a coup by detaining several top leaders including Suu Kyi and President Win Mint.
