At least 160 members of the Houthi rebels have been killed in airstrikes by a Saudi-led military coalition in the war-torn Middle Eastern province of Marib in Yemen.

A statement from the Saudi coalition on Saturday (October 16) confirmed that the Huthis had been killed in the airstrikes, news from NDTV.

The coalition quoted the state-run Saudi Press Agency as saying that 32 air attacks had been carried out in the Abdiya district in the past 24 hours targeting Huthis. Eleven Houthi military vehicles were also destroyed.

The coalition says more than 700 Iranian-backed Houthi members were killed in Monday's attack in Marib province. Abdia is located about 100 km from Marib.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, thousands of people have been displaced in Marib province this year, numbering about 10,000.

When the Yemeni civil war broke out in 2014, the Huthis captured the capital Sanaa, 120 kilometers west of Marib. In early 2015, Saudi-backed Yemen's ruling President Abd Rabbu Mansour al-Hadi fled to Saudi Arabia in the face of attacks by Houthi rebels. The Saudi-led military coalition launched a campaign against the Houthis in Yemen to bring back the ousted president.

The United Nations has termed Yemen as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Thousands of people have died and lakhs of people have been displaced in the country.

The United Nations says more than half of Yemen's population is in dire need of food and medicine.
