Bangladesh's ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will stay in India. But she will not seek political asylum in India. Instead, stay in the country through an Indian visa.
On Friday (August 9), CNN's affiliate News-18 reported this information.
News-18 said in this regard, “About Sheikh Hasina's political asylum, we have learned through our sources — remember this is exclusive to CNN News-18 — former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is going to stay in India for a long time. Earlier it was reported that Sheikh Hasina is trying to get political asylum in UK.
The media also said, “Hasina will stay in India on visa because we (India) don't have any refugee or aid seeker laws."
The journalist of News-18 said, "Hasina's attempt to get political asylum in the UK has been canceled for the time being because UK has not given any positive response in this regard. Besides, the US has also canceled her visa. Other European countries are pressuring the United Kingdom not to grant asylum to Hasina. But the Indian government has told Sheikh Hasina that she can stay in India until she settles her future plans."
Sheikh Hasina, 76, was forced to resign as prime minister on Monday after weeks of protests over government job quotas left more than 400 people dead. After the Bangladesh Army gave her a 45-minute ultimatum, she fled Dhaka and went to India.
