Two mortar attacks have been carried out in the protected green zone of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. The US Embassy is located very close to the site. At the same time, two rocket attacks targeted US air field north of Baghdad.
Iraqi security sources told international media that the attack was carried out simultaneously on Saturday evening (Jan. 4).
The US attack outside the Baghdad airport on Friday(Jan.3) took place within 24 hours of Iran's top general Qassim Soleimani being killed.
Security sources said mortar shells fell into the protected green zone Saturday evening, near the US embassy.
The Iraqi army says one mortar shell struck inside the security zone, while the other fell outside the embassy's security hideout.
Security sources and the Iraqi military also said a pair of rockets hit Balad Airport north of Baghdad at the same time.
Iranian military commander General Qassim Soleimani was killed outside the Baghdad airport on Friday under the direction of US President Donald Trump. Donald Trump claimed that General Soleimani was planning to attack US diplomats and civilians.
