The World Health Organization (WHO) has cautioned that excessive use of anti-biotic in the fight against coronavirus will increase bacterial resistance, leading to more deaths.

DG of WHO Tedros Adhanom Grebreiusus made the caution at a virtual press conference at the WHO headquarters in Geneva on Monday (June 1). A report in the British media The Guardian has revealed this information.

An alarming number of bacteria are becoming resistant to the drugs used to treat them, said the DG. Concerns have been raised that the misuse of antibiotics during the corona pandemic will exacerbate this trend.

Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria. Decreased effectiveness or non-functioning is called antibiotic resistance. When the antibiotic loses its effectiveness, the germs inside the body gain the ability to survive against the antibiotic. For this reason, antibiotics do not work anymore, nor does the disease heal.

He added that the widespread use of antibiotics in the treatment of corona has increased, thereby increasing the rate of bacterial resistance which is likely to increase the number of deaths. Very few people need antibiotics for corona treatment. Only those who have a bacterial infection need it.
