Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wahida Khanam was attacked for stealing at her official residence on the night of September 2. Three people have admitted their involvement in the incident during the preliminary interrogation. However, further investigations are being conducted to find out the cause of the attack.
RAB-13 captain Reza Ahmed Ferdous said this at a press briefing on Friday (September 4) evening. The press briefing was held at the RAB-13 headquarters in Rangpur.
Quoting accused Asadul Haque, the RAB-13 commander said a case has been filed for attacking and injuring UNO Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh, a freedom fighter. RAB has been conducting shadow investigation into the incident from the very beginning. Asadul was arrested from Kaliganj in Hilli on Friday morning, the day after the incident.
According to his confession, Nabirul and Santu Kumar Das were arrested after a day-long operation. In an initial confession, Asadul said that they went to UNO Wahida Khanam's residence for the purpose of burglary. Among them, Nabirul hit UNO Wahida Khanam on the head. He said that according to Asadul, they entered the UNO house with the intention of stealing and the hammering incident took place as they were obstructed. However, we are trying to find out the main motive of this incident by conducting more in-depth investigation.
Meanwhile, after interrogation, Asadul admitted that in the CCTV footage that he was wearing a red t-shirt. According to him, the red t-shirt was recovered. Later, according to the information given by him, two other Nabirul and Santu were arrested. Although they changed their location from time to time, we were able to arrest them later. Nabirul was the mastermind of the incident.
The RAB official added that the shadow investigation is still ongoing. It will take more time to find out if there is any other reason behind the incident. The accused will be remanded and interrogated. Ghoraghat Upazila Juba League convener Jahangir Alam and six others were arrested in the incident.
The three were released after questioning. They are Ghoraghat Upazila Juba League convener (expelled) Jahangir Alam (42), Shingra Union Juba League president Masud Rana (40), son of Golam Mostafa Adur of Dakshin Debipur village and night guard Nahid Hossain Palash (38).
Asadul Islam, 35, a member of the Upazila Juba League (expelled), Painter Nabirul Islam, 35, son of the late Faraj Uddin of Chawkbamunia Bishwanathpur area and Santu Chandra Das, 26, son of Khoka of the same area have been arrested for admitting responsibility.
Incidentally, last Wednesday (September 2) at around 3 am, the miscreants entered the official residence of UNO Wahida Khanam at Ghoraghat Upazila Parishad premises. They hacked UNO Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh to death and severely injured them with hammers. Sheikh Farid, brother of UNO Wahida Khanum, filed a case with Ghoraghat Police Station on Thursday night (September 3).
