Ten bodies of Netrokona trawler mishap handed over

Netrokona: The bodies of 10 people killed in a trawler capsize by a sand-carrying bolgate boat on the Gumai River in Netrokona's Kalmakanda Upazila have been handed over to their families.

The bodies were handed over on Wednesday (September 9) afternoon.


At that time Netrokona and Sunamganj district administrations paid Taka 20,000 to each family for burying the dead body.


The dead included five women and five children including six members of two families.


The deceased have been identified as Anik, 7, son of Alamgir Hossain of Kamarura village in Dharmapasha's Madhyanagar area, Lucky Akter, 30, wife of Habikul of the same village and his two children Tumpa Akhter, 5, and Zahid Hossain, 3. Sultana Akhter (45) of the same village, Lutfunnahar, wife of Wahab Ali of Inatnagar village of Dharmapasha upazila and Yasin, two and a half years old, Hamida Khatun (45), wife of Abuchan of Medani village of Netrokona Sadar and Majida Akhter (50) wife of Saheb Ali of Inatnagar village of Dharmapasha upazila.


Besides, 6 survivors have returned to their respective homes with first aid.


Meanwhile, Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Kazi Mohammad Abdur Rahman, Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Abdul Ahad Khan, Netrokona Superintendent of Police Akbar Munshi, Kalmakanda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Sohel Rana, Dharmapasha Acting Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abu Taleb, Kalmakanda Police Station Officer in charge Mazharul Karim visited the spot.


According to police and local sources, the trawler, which was carrying about 36 passengers from Sunamganj to Netrokona Sadar's Thakurakona Ghat, reached Gumai river in Barakhapan union of Kalmakanda upazila at around 10 am and it was hit by a sand laden boat and the trawler sank. Later, with the help of local people, the fire service members recovered 10 bodies and rescued 6 people alive. However, at least 10-12 people are still missing. The rescue operation is underway.


Netrokona Superintendent of Police Akbar Ali Munshi said the bodies of 10 people had been handed over to their families. 6 people have been rescued alive. And 10-12 more are missing. The rescue operation is still continuing.
