Cox’s Bazaar: The trial of former Teknaf MP Abdur Rahman Bodi has begun in a case filed by the ACC alleging possession of assets outside the known income and concealment of assets.

Acting Judge Ismail Hossain of the Divisional Special Judge's Court passed the order on Sunday (September 13) through forming charges. Former Teknaf MP Abdur Rahman Bodi was present in the court at the time.

Mentioning that the next proceedings of the case will start on October 15 with the deposition of witnesses, prosecution counsel Mezbah Uddin said that the trial of the case filed by the ACC against Abdur Rahman Bodi for acquiring illegal assets and concealing assets was not started due to various reasons. Abul Kalam Azad, deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Chottogram Region, filed the case with the Double Mooring Police Station in Chottogram on December 17, 2007, alleging illegal acquisition of assets during the army-backed caretaker government. Bodi was the mayor of Teknaf pourashava at that time.

According to sections 26/2 and 27/1 of the ACC Act, the case against Abdur Rahman Bodi is under section 26/1, the information of Taka 43 lakh 43 thousand 449 and  53 paisa was concealed and under section 27/1, he acquired assets outside the known income amounting to Taka 65 lakh 70 thousand 419 taka. Allegations of possession of illegal assets have been brought.
According to court sources, another ACC deputy director Ali Akbar filed a charge sheet against former Teknaf MP Abdur Rahman Bodi in 2008 after investigating the case filed by Abul Kalam Azad.

District and Sessions Judge Ismail Hossain is acting judge of the divisional special judge court as there is no judge in the court.

Abdur Rahman Bodi was two-time Member of Parliament from Cox's Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) constituency. He was deprived of nomination in the December 2018 elections in the face of fierce criticism over various activities including smuggling of yaba. The current Member of Parliament for that constituency is his wife Shaheen Akhter Chowdhury.
