International Day for Right to Information observed in Faridpur

Faridpur: International Day for Right to Information was observed here on Monday(Sept.28) in a befitting manner through holding a multimedia presentation and discussion meeting jointly organized by local District Administration and TIB, Faridpur chapter.

The discussion meeting was held in the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner(DC) maintaining health safety rules due to Corona pandemic. DC Atul Sarkar was the chief guest while ADC (Gen) Roksana Rahman chaired the discussion meeting.

At the very outset of the meeting Area Manager of TIB Zahirul Islam Jwel made a power point presentation depicting various norms and gradual evolution of Right to Information Law and its contents in Bangladesh.

DC Atul Sarkar in his speech said that information is a power to ensure transparency and accountability for eliminating corruption from our country. Information in any form must be true which would help to remove corruption from the society, he said.

He urged upon the attending persons in the meeting to feed him with information about her own office or even offices at the upazilla levels so that he can take appropriate action to ameliorate the sufferings of the people. He also said that it was a bold step of the present government to enact Right to Information law. He emphasized on removing sufferings of the poor peasants in land related tangles.

Speakers at the discussion meeting stressed the need for creating awareness among the citizens about practicing and using the right to information law particularly at field levels because the rural people en-mass do not know about the law which is their right as sanctioned by the government.

Speakers said that for open and democratic society, reducing poverty, curbing corruption and enhancing transparency, enforcement and practice of right to information is very important where foreign investment and public procurement form a huge chunk in less developed countries is customary like us.

The discussion meeting among others was participated by educationist Prof. Md. Shahjahan, Faridpur Sadar Upazilla chairman and Awami League leader Abdur Razzaque Molla, SANAK president Advocate Shipra Goshwami, Press Club vice-president Saiful Islam Ohid and NGO Racine Executive Director Asma Akhtar Mukta.
