Dhaka: Due to strong current in the river and corona pandemic, no span could be set on the Padma Bridge for four long months. The 32nd span will be installed today on the 4th and 5th pillars of the Mawa side of the Padma Bridge.

Padma Bridge Executive Engineer Dewan Mohammad Abdul Quader confirmed to Barta24.com on Saturday (October 10) that the span would be installed.

"If all go well, the installation of 32nd span will be completed by noon," he said.

If this 32nd span is installed, 4800 meters of the bridge will be visible and only 9 out of 41 spans will remain.

China Major Bridge Engineering Company (MBEC), a Chinese contractor, is working on the construction of the main bridge and Sino Hydro Corporation, another Chinese company is working on river management.

The two-storey Padma Bridge is between Mawa in Munshiganj and Jajira in Shariatpur. The length of the main bridge is 6.15 km.

Construction of the Padma Bridge had begun in December 2014. Work on the Padma Bridge may be completed by the end of next year. After that, vehicles will pass over the Padma Bridge, the bridge authorities said.

Earlier, the 31st span of the bridge was set on May 10.
