Local government elections, including pourashaves will begin from December, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda said this after a meeting of the commission at the Nirbachan Bhavan in Agargaon on Monday (November 2).

The CEC said, ‘Today we had a long meeting. From the selection of local government bodies that have been due, to managing, scheduling and appointing returning officers, we have done all the work that we have to do. The elections that will take place between January and the first week of February will probably be held by the end of December. We have such preparations. '

He said, ‘Pourashava elections will be held in EVM. EVMs cannot be used in all by-elections or general elections of Upazila Parishad and Union Parishad. Maybe some numbers can be done, if the DG of NID thinks he has the capacity after fixing the municipal elections, maybe he will do some elections in EVM.

The CEC said the elections for pourashavas, zilla parishads and union parishads will be held by the first week of February. During this period, more than 20 pourashavas will be vacant. Besides, there will be many by-elections.

Nurul Huda said, ‘We hope that the election of the pourashavas can be completed by May. These will be done step by step. Our guess is, I will be able to complete the elections in 5 steps. However, we have not yet decided in what steps the elections will be held.
