Bangabandhu’s sculpture defacing in Kushtia: 164 of two Madrasa teachers

Kushtia: Among the four accused arrested in the case filed in connection with the vandalism of the under construction sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Kushtia, two teachers of the madrasa have given confessional statements under section 164 Cr. P.C in the court. They have confessed to cooperating in the escape of the main accused after that incident.

Two madrassa teachers confessed in the court of Kushtia Senior Judicial Magistrate Delwar Hossain on Saturday (December 12) afternoon.

They are: Ibn Masood, madrasa teacher of Jagati Paschimpara area of Kushtia town and Md. Dhubail village of Mirpur upazila of Kushtia. Al Amin (27) and a resident of Pabna Aminpur police station’s Diar Bamundi area Yusuf Ali (26).

After four days of interrogation in police custody, the investigating officer of the case and Kushtia Model Police Station Inspector Nishi Kant Sarkar took them to court around 2pm. They later confessed.

On the other hand, two students of the madrasa, one of the main accused in the case on Sunday (December 13), can give confessional statements in the court under section 164.

They are students of the Hefz department of the same madrasa hailing from Shingpur village of Mirpur upazila of Kushtia Md. Abu Bakar alias Mithun (19) and Sabuj Islam alias Nahid (20) of Filipnagar (Golabaria) area of Daulatpur upazila of the district.

According to court sources, teacher Yusuf Ali said in his deposition that he was teaching in the Hefz department at Madrasa Ibn Masood Kushtia. 17 students of 6 departments are studying. Abu Bakar and Nahid, accused of vandalizing Bangabandhu's sculpture are students of the same department. I came to know about their involvement in the incident of vandalism of Bangabandhu's sculpture at 8:30 am last Saturday. He later advised them to go home from the madrasa. The next time the police showed them CCTV footage of the vandalism, they did not admit it despite knowing the two accused.

Another teacher, Al Amin, made a similar statement. However, he mentioned in his deposition that everyone in that madrasa listens to Waz on their mobile phones. Especially Mamunul Haque, Hafizur Rahman Siddiqui, Khaled Saifullah Ayubi and others liked to listen to Waz. This madrasa teacher also advised the two accused madrasa students to move away from the madrasa to their respective homes.

It may be mentioned that the sculpture under construction of Bangabandhu was vandalized at the intersection of five roads in Kushtia town on Friday night. A day later, the police arrested the two teachers and two students of the madrasa and remanded them in custody on a court order.
