The UNESCO has decided to introduce Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Prize in the field of creative economy.

Foreign Minister Dr.AK Abdul Momen in his office on Sunday (December 13) disclosed this information.

The huge recognition comes as the nation celebrates the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman this year and prepares for the 50th anniversary of the country's independence next year.

UNESCO Executive Board adopted Bangladesh's proposal of establishing the prize at the 210th virtual session on December 11 after the UN agency's Joint Meeting of the Programme and External Relations Commission and the Finance and Administrative Commission approved it on December 9.

The UNESCO Executive Board made the announcement in its website where it said the proposal was adopted recognising the potential of the creative sector to provide young people with economically and environmentally sustainable jobs, in line with the UNESCO Operational Strategy on Youth 2014-2021.

It also recognises the necessity to encourage women in the creative economy, in line with UNESCO's global priority gender equality, and that the prize will create a knowledge-sharing mechanism by capturing, celebrating and communicating best practice in the development of creative entrepreneurship.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization considers that the UNESCO-Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Prize for Creative Economy is in line with strategic objective 8 of its Medium-Term Strategy for 2014-2021 (37 C/4) and with the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.
