A team of researchers from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has decoded the genome sequence of the novel coronavirus.

Research by the University's Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (GEB) has found a new mutation in the genomes of two viruses (Genome: 27862: Del: ATCAT) that is very different from viruses in other parts of the world.

The information was officially presented by the research team of the GEB department under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed in the conference room of the university on Tuesday (January 5) afternoon.

Nur Nabi Azad, Lecturer, GEB Department, presented the results of the study through Jewel Slide.

The study found a total of 79 mutations in the genome structure of the virus. A total of 47 mutations are found at the protein level, with 1 matching only one in the United Kingdom. However, it does not match the currently discussed mutants in the UK.

The research team collected virus samples from four districts of greater Sylhet last November and December and decoded the genome sequence. Of these, 10 samples (Sunamganj-5 and Habiganj-5) were recently submitted to the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza database and the organization released them on 31 December.

According to the research team, there are doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccine as the virus is constantly changing through mutations. The research team has informed that the research of this virus will continue.

At that time VC Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed said, we are proud of this research of teachers. Our university has been with the people of this region since the beginning of the coronavirus infection and our work will continue. One more machine has been procured so as not to disrupt the corona detection process and the purchase of a new machine for genome sequencing is in process.

The Vice-Chancellor further said that the work of the university is not just about imparting education; rather, it is our responsibility to work for the welfare of humanity through research. Keeping these issues in mind, the allocation in the research sector has been increased more than 7 times this time.

Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Islam, Dean of the School of Life Sciences, Professor Dr. SM Abu Sayem and GEB Department Professor Dr. Md. Shamsul Haque delivered the keynote speech.
