City corporations would do better in water logging problem

A meeting will be held next week with the two city corporations to fix the drainage management action plan to reduce water logging in the capital, said Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Md. Tajul Islam.

The Minister also said that the city corporations will be able to do better than WASA as the responsibility has been transferred from Dhaka WASA to two city corporations. He was responding to a question from reporters after the awarding of 'Bill Collection Award-2019-2020' by Dhaka WASA to a public-private bank held at Buriganga Hall at Dhaka WASA Bhaban in the capital on Saturday (January 16).

Md. Tajul Islam said the work has already started under the direction of the ministry after handing over the city's drainage system from Dhaka WASA to the two city corporations, but the ministry will work out a work plan for the two city corporations next week. Knowing the plans of the two mayors, the work plan will also be fixed by the ministry.

Everything needs to be done to make Dhaka a modern livable city by solving its civic problems. The local government minister said the mayors of the two city corporations were elected by popular vote. Only the people's representatives can fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the people.

He also expressed hope that the two mayors would be able to relieve the city dwellers from this problem as the responsibility of drainage management has been handed over to the two city corporations.

Responding to a question on the pile of waste in Aminbazar, the Local Government Minister said he started working on waste management in the capital from the time he took charge. According to him, plans have been taken to set up an incineration plant at Aminbazar to generate electricity from waste and activities have started. If the incineration plant supplies the required amount of waste per day, there will be no more waste.

He also said that incineration plants will be set up in all city corporations and in each district. Tajul Islam. Responding to another question from reporters on the conflict between the former and current mayors of Dhaka South City, the Minister said, not everyone has the same vision. There may be differences in human attitudes. But over time, that is likely to change. He also mentioned that the conflict between the two mayors will be resolved soon.

The Minister said it is easy to solve any problem with the participation of all, a big example of which is dengue outbreak control in the capital. Mosquito control is still under control with the participation and awareness of the city dwellers and the concerted efforts of all.

Dhaka WASA Managing Director Engineer Taksim A Khan was the special guest at the event chaired by Dhaka WASA Board Chairman Engineer Golam Mostafa and Additional Secretary of the Local Government Division Mohammad Ibrahim.

The 'Bill Collection Award' was given to the Managing Directors of 37 public and private banks on the occasion.
