A Kuwaiti court has sentenced Laxmipur-2 MP Kazi Shahid Islam Papul to four years in prison on charges of money laundering and human trafficking.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen said on Thursday (January 28) to Barta24.com that we don't know anything about this. We learned about it through the media. The Kuwaiti government did not inform us about this. We will think about the next step if we know about this from the Kuwaiti government.

A court in the country handed down a verdict against Kazi Shaheed Islam Papul on Thursday (January 28). The Kuwaiti court also fined Papul 19 lakh Kuwaiti dinars, or 53 crore 19 lakh 72 thousand Bangladesh currency. The court also handed down the same sentence to Maj. Gen. Majen Al Jarrah, a dismissed Kuwaiti Interior Ministry official.

Earlier, in July last year, Papul denied allegations of human trafficking and money laundering. However, he admitted to giving bribes to some Kuwait officials.

On last December 27, the ACC confiscated 617 bank accounts of 8 banks of Papul's family, more than 30 acres of land, flats in Gulshan and other assets in the country. On November 11, the ACC filed a case against MP Papul, his wife MP Selina Islam, daughter Wafa Islam and sister-in-law Jasmine Pradhan on charges of money laundering and illegal acquisition of assets.
