Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukder has termed the abstention of voters as an omen for democracy. The reason of this negativity should be found out and measures shall have to be taken to bring remedies. The growing incidence of election violence and code of conduct violations is a matter of concern.

He made the remarks during an online meeting with concerned officials on the occasion of the polling in 29 municipalities of Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions on Wednesday (February 10).

Addressing the polling officials Mahbub Talukder said, "I am concerned about the growing incidence of election violence and violations of the code of conduct. I do not understand why a peaceful environment cannot be ensured by exercising the immense power you have during elections. At the same time, I would like to say that no one will be tolerated in failing to perform his election duties properly. In this regard, we believe in zero tolerance policy.

He added, ‘He never expects biased behavior from those who will perform election duties. They did not come to perform their duties out of affection or dislike for any individual, group or party. All the candidates should be in the role of impartial like a judge. '

The Election Commissioner said, "Assurance, impartiality, security, rules and regulations and control are important challenges for the Election Commission. We are ready to face this challenge. "

In the fourth and fifth phase, votes will be taken in 29 municipalities in Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.
