Today is the historic 7th of March. It is a unique day in the history of the long freedom struggle and liberation war of the Bengali nation. On this day in 1971, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman addressed millions of people at the then Racecourse Maidan (now Suhrawardy Udyan), saying, "This time the struggle is for our liberation, this time the struggle is for freedom."

With this inspiring declaration of Bangabandhu on March 7, 1971, the Bengali nation got the direction of independence. After that the freedom-loving people of the country started preparing for the final battle from house to house. At this thunderous sound of Bangabandhu, the Bengali nation became excited with the joy of the impending great liberation. For centuries, the exploited and deprived Bengalis have stepped forward with the determination of the desired liberation.

He called for the repeal of martial law, the transfer of power to the elected representatives of the people, an end to shelling and killings, the return of the army to the barracks, and the formation of judicial commissions to investigate the killings.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic speech on March 7 has already been recognized as a world heritage site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). With the recognition of this speech as a world heritage, the pride of the people of Bangladesh has once again been established internationally.

On this occasion of the day President Abdul Hamid Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered separate messages.

Various programs have been taken up by the Awami League to observe the day with due dignity.
