Efficient technology and green energy will increase the sustainable growth of industrial plants in the long run. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid has said that the use of environmentally friendly fuels will put the garment industry ahead in the global competition.
He made the remarks at a virtual seminar on solar rooftop and net metering possibilities in the garment industry organized by Shreda on Tuesday (March 23rd).
He said the leaders of the Knitwear Industry Owners Association of Bangladesh need to do more to promote green technology in line with global climate change. Arrangements are being made to install minigrids, solar home systems and reach out to remote areas through submarine cables. Generating electricity using solar technology using net system in industrial establishments can be a good investment. Through this it is possible to reduce electricity bills and establish green industrialization.
According to the Renewable Energy Policy-2008, the target is to generate 10 percent electricity from renewable sources. To meet this goal, among other activities, the Net Metering Guidelines were formulated by the Power Division in July 2018 for the expansion of rooftop solar in the net metering system, which was revised in November 2019 to include the OPEC model. In this way, the power consumers are able to export the surplus power to the national grid after using their required power by installing rooftop solar system. On the one hand, it reduces consumer electricity consumption; while on the other hand, carbon dioxide emissions are significantly reduced.
The workshop discussed in detail the key issues of net metering rooftop solar, the application conditions for rooftop solar projects in this manner, the equipment and installation criteria for project implementation, and various practical examples of investment and payback in both loan and non-loan.
The virtual event, chaired by Shreda Chairman (Additional Secretary) Mohammad Alauddin, was addressed among others by BEPRC Chairman Zakia Sultana and BKMEA first Vice President Mohammad Hatem.
