Commercial activities at Benapole Port closed on May Day

Import and export trade with India remain closed today at Benapole Port on the occasion of historic May Day. However, people who are stuck in India due to the ongoing 14-day travel ban can enter into the country showing release letter from Bangladesh high commission in India.

Acting Director of Benapole Port Abdul Jajil confirmed the matter to Barta24 on Saturday morning.

He said, "All kinds of commercial activities including import and export remain closed today (Saturday) on the occasion of May Day as the government declared the day is a public holiday. Tight security measures have been taken to avert any unwanted incident at the port during the holiday. Commercial activities will resume at the port from tomorrow (May 2) morning. "

Officer-in-Charge of Benapole Immigration Check Post Ahsan Habib said people who traveled in India and Bangladesh before the travel ban are returning in both countries amid holiday on condition.

However, passengers immigration with a new passport remain closed from April 26 for two weeks, he added. 

Around 500 trucks loaded with various goods enter into Bangladesh and 150 trucks loaded various goods enter into India daily through Benapole Port. Bangladesh government earns Tk 20-40 crore revenue daily from this important port.
