At least 26 people were killed as a sand laden bulkhead hits a speedboat near Kathalbari Ghat of Banglabazar-Shimulia water route under Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Monday (May 3) morning.
The accident took place around 6:00 am. Several people were missing till filing the report.
members of fire service, naval police, and army jointly operating the rescue operation. They recovered all 26 bodies so far. Out of them, Three are women and one is children.
Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately after the accident.
Traffic inspector of Banglabazar Ferry Ghat Ashiqur Rahman said a speedboat carrying passengers was coming to Banglabazar from Shimulia of Munshiganj in the early morning. The speedboat overturned near the ghat as a sand laden bulkhead hits it.
On information, fire service and naval police rushed to the spot and recovered 26 bodies from Padma river. However, four people managed to ashore by swimming.
Confirming the matter, Shibchar Fire Service and Civil Defense In-Charge Syamal Biswas said rescue operation is being continued.
