Recklessly driven speedboat is responsible for the accident on Padma of Madaripur which claimed 26 people on Monday, said the probe committee formed to investigate the deadly accident.
After being informed from the law enforcers, firefighters and locals, the probe committee primarily blamed over speed of the speedboat in the accident.
Deputy commissioner of Madaripur Dr. Rahima Khatun formed the six member probe committee immediately after the accident. She also announced to give Tk 20,000 compensation to each family of the deceased.
Fire service assistant director Md. Nazrul Islam said the speedboat could not control its speed near the ferry ghat. As a result, it hit the bulkhead and overturned.
At least 26 people were killed as a speedboat hits a sand laden bulkhead near Kathalbari Ghat of Banglabazar-Shimulia water route under Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Monday (May 3) morning.
The accident took place around 6:00 am. Members of fire service, naval police, and army jointly operating the rescue operation. They recovered all 26 bodies so far. Out of them, Three are women and one is children.
Traffic inspector of Banglabazar Ferry Ghat Ashiqur Rahman said a speedboat carrying 22-24 passengers was coming to Banglabazar from Shimulia of Munshiganj in the early morning. The speedboat overturned near the ghat after hitting the bulkhead.
