Researchers have said that there is a possibility of getting natural gas in Rajbari, Faridpur and Madaripur districts. Researchers mentioned this possibility in a virtual discussion session titled 'Hydrocarbon Stratified Trap in Bangladesh: Searching out of Conventional Streams' of Mir Moinul Haque Lecture Series-6 which started at 8 pm on Saturday (May 22).

At the meeting, the researchers expressed hope that there is a possibility of getting a lot of gas in these three districts. So far, Bapex has been able to locate a total of 9 gas fields in the country. Inside it was all in uneven parts. Now in the flat part Bapex should expand its research. There is a lot of gas in these flat parts.

The keynote address was delivered by Newaz Khalis Ahmed gas-oil expert of  Alberta Calgary, Canada. His research revealed that there are stratified traps at a depth of 4 to 6 km in these three districts. If we work by capturing Faridpur, it is possible to remove the gas shortage in the country.

Experts said Rajbari, Faridpur and Madaripur districts have huge quantities of hydrocarbon stratified traps in the ground. Their research has shown that gas can be found in these traps at a depth of 4 to 6 km.

Former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad addressed the Zoom meeting as a special guest. Lieutenant General (Rtd.) Mahfuzur Rahman, Dhaka University Professor Dr. Badrul Alam took part in the meeting. Energy and Power Secretary Mollah Amjad Hossain, Jasim Uddin, Dr. Nasir, Nazim Ahmed, Dr. Syed Ismail Hossain and other prominent personalities including journalists from Canada, USA, London, Norway, Dhaka, Faridpur, Rajbari and Madaripar.

Dr. Badrul Alam said gas was found in Sylhet, Chittagong and Cumilla areas. However, there is gas in Rajbari-Faridpur and Madaripur belt. But due to the depth, no research has been done on gas reserve in these areas.

Mollah Md. Amjad Hossain said, Mir Moinul Haque Lecture Series-6 is a very important discussion. Confusion at the expert level is harming the people of Bangladesh. There are two opinions between them. Some said Bangladesh is running out of gas. Another group said Bangladesh has huge gas reserves. However, one thing is true; the condition of getting gas in an easy way in Bangladesh is over. Bapex is currently a strong organization. The Prime Minister has strengthened Bapex. They have a lot of responsibilities. It would have been nice to give Bapex the opportunity to work with Russian companies working in Bangladesh.

Former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Abul Kalam Azad, who was the special guest, said that the exploration of gas and oil needs to be done extensively. However, it would be better to search for gas separately in water and on land.
