The institution that once played the biggest role in the rise of Bengal, Bengali and Bangladesh is 'Dhaka University'. From the language movement of 1952 to the education movement of 1962, the six-point movement of 1966, the mass uprising of 1971, the great liberation war of 1971 and the anti-authoritarian movement of the nineties, the university has shown its pomp everywhere. That being said, it is the only university in the world that has given birth to an independent country. The organization that never compromised on the question of injustice, today the position of that organization is in question.
Hafizur Rahman, a 2015-16 session student of the Department of Information Science and Library Management and general secretary of Dhaka University Mime Action, went missing from the Curzon Hall area of Dhaka University nine days ago.
On Saturday morning, the day after Eid ul Fitr, Hafizur Rahman left his home district of Brahmanbaria for Dhaka. The last time he spoke to his mother that evening. Since then his phone has been found switched off. Complaints were also lodged at the police station as usual.
Hafizur Rahman's body was identified on Sunday (May 23), nine days after he went missing. On the evening of the day after Eid (May 15), police recovered his blood stained body from the central Shaheed Minar area. He later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
For so many days, his body was lying in the morgue of the hospital as 'unknown'. I left out the mysterious death of Hafizur Rahman. Murder or suicide - I also left out that debate. Yet, how can the University authorities avoid liability for this incident? A student of the University has gone missing from the campus and his body was found in the University premises. And that is the body of Hafizur Rahman, it took 9 days to identify! Did the university administration know about this incident at all? Becoming aware falls within the responsibility of the University administration.
Dhaka University campus is becoming risky for students day by day. Police are picking up students from campus without the permission of the University administration. The body of the student found in the University area is being kept in the morgue day after day in the identity of 'Anonymous'. However, the University administration is silent. It also failed to provide security to students. We do not want such a University.
