8 people killed in lightning and electrocution in Jamalpur

At different places in Jamalpur, 6 people were killed by lightning and 2 others were electrocuted.

Three people, including a woman, were killed in Bakshiganj upazilla of the district, one each in Melandha, Dewanganj and Sarishabari during the thunderstorm on Friday (June 4) evening and an uncle and nephew were electrocuted in Islampur upazilla in the morning.

According to local sources, Harbadsha, 45, son of Mohijal Haque of Purbakalkihara village in Merurchar union of Bakshiganj upazila, Akija Begum, 35, wife of Abdul Khaleq of the same village and Khalilur Rahman, 55, son of Kala Mia of Uttar Maichhanirchar village were killed when lightning hit them during the rain at around 4.30 pm on Friday.

On the other hand, Rana Mia, 18, son of Abul Hossain of Uttar Gamaria village in Sadar union of Dewanganj upazila died in a lightning strike on the same day.

Besides, a housewife named Anguri Begum (45) was killed in a lightning strike at Barai Patal village of Bhatara union in Sarishabari upazila around 5pm. She is the wife of Mozammel Haque.

Farmer Tazel Mandal, 40, son of Kazim Uddin of Bir Ghosherpara village in Ghosherpara union of Melandah upazila, was sorting hay in the field near his house when it rain in the evening. At this time he died in a sudden lightning strike.

Meanwhile, in the morning, a microphone was tied above the Ripon Akand grocery store in Mohammad Bazar of Goallerchar Union in Islampur Upazila. At this time, the microphone got connected to the 11,000 KV above the shop. The deceased were identified as Ripon Akand, 30, son of Abdur Rahim and his nephew Alif Akand, 12, son of Tofazzal Hossain.

Dewanganj, Bakshiganj, Melandah, Sarishabari, Islampur Upazila administration and police sources have confirmed the deaths of six people in lightning and two in electrocution.
