Dhaka has rejected a US proposal to grant temporary asylum to some Afghan nationals in Bangladesh.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told the media on Monday (August 16) night.

"We cannot comply with the US request to grant asylum to some people from Afghanistan in Bangladesh," he said.

According to Biman Bangladesh Airlines' planning department, the United States has offered Biman a third party to evacuate about 45,000 people from Afghanistan.

The foreign minister said Bangladesh already has a problem with sheltering 11 lakh Rohingyas. Bangladesh does not have the opportunity to give shelter to the people of any new country. So I rejected the US proposal.

The United States has sided with US supporters in Afghanistan in the wake of the Taliban's rise. Rescuing them, they are arranging temporary shelter in different countries. As part of this, the Biden administration requested that some people be granted asylum in Bangladesh. The foreign minister said, "We have heard all this and said that we are already worried about the Rohingyas. Our country is not big. We have a large population. It is not possible for us to give shelter to someone new.
