The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) has decided to install rubber lining on its ferries to manage repeated collisions with the pillars of the Padma Bridge.

On Thursday (August 19) BIWTC Chairman Syed Mohammad Tajul Islam told this  to the media. However, after the collision with the pillars of the Padma Bridge, a BIWTC investigation committee proposed to put rubber lining on the pillars of the bridge.

BIWTC Chairman Syed Mohammad Tajul Islam said rubber fencing will be installed in front and back of five ferries plying on Banglabazar-Shimulia route for the time being. We will call for e-tender for this.

He added that experts have already given their opinion on the rubber lining of the ferry. We are also studying the subject.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Khandaker Anwarul Islam has blamed the negligence of the ferry masters for repeated hitting the pillars of the Padma Bridge.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday (August 18) about the repeated hit of the ferry on the Padma Bridge, the Secretary said there was a sudden current in the Padma that no one could control the ferry at that time. Many times masters do not follow a specific route. Three incidents occurred due to not following the route. All three ferries crossed without going upstream. Three incidents have taken place for this.
