Flood situation may further deteriorate in the lower basin

Moderate to heavy rains in the upper reaches of the country as well as rains in the central and northern regions are likely to worsen the flood situation in the next few days. As a result, the ongoing flood situation will continue for another 5 to 7 days. In addition, the flood forecasting center for the next ten days said that the water level in the rivers around Dhaka may rise.

The meteorological department has forecast moderate to heavy rains in the next 72 hours in the northern, northeastern and Himalayan foothills of West Bengal, Assam and Meghalaya in India. Rainfall will continue in the northern and central parts of the country.

The Water Development Board's Flood Forecast and Warning Center has hinted that the flood situation in the lower basins of Pabna, Manikganj, Rajbari, Faridpur and Shariatpur districts could worsen slightly. Water is flowing above the danger level at 7 points of the river.

According to the Center for Flood Forecasting and Warning, water levels in the Brahmaputra and Jamuna are rising at the same time as the water level in the Padma River which may continue for the next 24 hours. In the next 24 hours, the flood situation in Pabna, Manikganj, Rajbari, Faridpur and Shariatpur districts of the country may deteriorate slightly. Besides, the water level at Bhagyakul point of Padma river and Narayanganj point of Shitalakshya river may cross the danger line.

The flood forecasting center for the next ten days said that the water level of the rivers around Dhaka may rise in the plain land. There is no danger of crossing the danger line in the basins of the rivers around Dhaka.

The water of Jamuna river is flowing over the danger line at Aricha point of Shibalaya in Manikganj. Houses and crop lands in different areas of the district have been washed away by the river. At Sirajganj Town Protection Embankment the water of Jamuna river has increased by 3 cm and is flowing 3 cm below the danger level. Thousands of people along the river are in dire straits as new areas have been flooded. In Shariatpur, the water of Padma river is flowing over the danger line at Sureshwar point of Naria. As the river water started rising in Kurigram, more than a thousand houses in the Dharla Basin were flooded and 3,200 hectares of transplanted Aman were submerged. Various crops and rural unpaved roads in the low lying areas of the char areas are under water now.
