Dhaka: Today is the 17th death anniversary of Begum Ivy Rahman, former women's affairs secretary of Awami League. Ivy Rahman was seriously injured in the barbaric grenade attack on an anti- terrorism rally organized by the Awami League on August 21, 2004 on Bangabandhu Avenue. She breathed her last on August 24 after battling with death for four days at the Combined Military Hospital.

Today, the Awami League will observe the day with due respect. Ivy Rahman's two legs were severed in the grenade attack to assassinate Awami League President Sheikh Hasina. She was admitted to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital in a critical condition. She fought with death for four days. In private life, Ivy Rahman was the wife of the late President Zillur Rahman. She is the mother of Nazmul Hasan Papon, Member of Parliament and President of Bangladesh Cricket Control Board.

Various organizations have taken programs on the occasion of Ivy Rahman's death anniversary. The Awami League's program includes visiting her grave at Banani graveyard at 9 am, paying homage, milad, prayer mahfil and munajat. Leaders of the Central Executive Committee of the Awami League, Presidents of the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Awami League, General Secretaries and Presidents of the affiliated organizations, General Secretaries will participate in accordance with the rules of health protection.

Ivy Rahman's full name is Jebun Nahar Rahman Ivy. She was born on July 7, 1944 in an aristocratic family in Bhairab. Her father Jalal Uddin Ahmed was the principal of Dhaka College and her mother Hasina Begum was an ideal housewife.

Ivy Rahman got married to the then well known student leader Zillur Rahman on June 27, 1958 while studying in class IX. She was the fifth of eight sisters and four brothers. Her only son Nazmul Hasan Papon is currently a Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-7 (Bhairab-Kuliarchar) constituency and President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board. She was also mother of two daughters Tania and Moyna.

Ivy Rahman started her secular and democratic political life by getting involved in the politics of Chhatra League.
