Boat capsize in Brahmanbaria: 17 bodies recovered

The bodies of 17 people have been recovered after a passenger boat capsized when it was hit by a sand-laden trawler at Laiska Beel in Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila. Many are still missing.

The incident took place at around 5:30 pm on Friday (August 27) at Laiska Bill in the upazila. Upon receiving the news, the locals, police and fire service personnel reached the spot and started the rescue operation.

Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Daulah Khan confirmed the rescue of 17 bodies.

According to police and local sources, the trawler with more than 100 passengers left Champaknagar by boat in Vijay Nagar of the district at 4.30 pm for Anandabazar Ghat in Sadar district. On the way there was a collision with a sand-laden trawler coming from the opposite direction in the Laiska Beel area. The passenger boat sank.

Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Daulah Khan said police and fire service personnel had reached the spot and started the rescue operation. The bodies of 17 people have already been recovered. He also said that the number of casualties could increase further.
