Brahmanbaria boat capsize, 21 died, more feared to die and injured

The bodies of 21 people have been recovered after a passenger boat capsized when it was hit by a sand-laden trawler at Laiska Beel in Brahmanbaria Sadar Upazila. Many are still missing.

The incident took place at around 5:30 pm on Friday (August 27) at Laiska Beel in Sadar upazila. Upon receiving the news, the locals, police and fire service personnel reached the spot and started the rescue operation.

Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat-ud-Daulah Khan confirmed the rescue of 21 bodies.

According to police and local sources, the trawler with more than 100 passengers left Champaknagar boat ghat of Vijayanagar at 4.30 pm for Anandabazar ghat in Sadar upazila. On the way there was a collision with a sand-laden trawler coming from the opposite direction in the Laiska Beel area. The passenger boat sank.

At first the locals started the rescue work. Upon receiving the news, the police and fire service personnel went to the spot and started the rescue operation. Later, a diving team of Kishoreganj Fire Service went to the spot and started the rescue operation.

Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Hayat Ud Daula Khan said police and fire service personnel reached the spot and started the rescue operation. The bodies of 21 people have already been recovered. The identities of the dead were not immediately known. He added that the number of casualties could rise further.

He added that each of the victims will be given financial assistance of Tk. 20,000. Besides, all the injured will be given all kinds of medical treatment free of cost.
