The expatriates have sent 155 crore US dollars (about Tk. 13 thousand 210 crore in Bangladeshi currency) as remittances in just 25 days of this August.

Bangladesh Bank sources confirmed the matter on Monday (August 30).

According to the latest data from the central bank, remittances to the country through five state-owned commercial banks from August 2 to 26 reached 33 crore US dollars. Remittances through private banks came to 118.60 crore. In addition, 69 lakh dollars came through foreign banks and 2 crore 74 lakh through one of the two specialized banks.

According to the source, most of the remittances came through Islami Bank in 25 days of this month. 44 crore 45 lakh dollar came through the bank. After that, about 16 crore dollars came through Dutch-Bangla Bank, 13 crore 72 lakh dollars through Agrani Bank, 8 crore 96 lakh dollars through Sonali Bank and 5 crore 18 lakh dollars through Pubali Bank.

Concerned sources said that remittances through the informal sector to the legal channels have increased due to the government's cash incentives and control of foreign travel in Corona. As a result, remittance inflows are positive even in the Corona pandemic.

Earlier in July, remittances to the country reached 187 crore 15 lakh US dollars.

In the fiscal year 2020-21, remittances of USD 2477 crore came which is 36.10 percent more than the previous financial year. The central bank said that such huge remittances had not come to the country in any previous financial year.
