On September 12, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate five power plants with a total generating capacity of 879 MW.

Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Director (Public Relations) Saiful Islam said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would inaugurate the power plants via video conference from her official residence Ganobhaban at 10am on that day.

He said the five power plants are Bibiana-3 400 MW compound cycle power plant in Habibganj, Unit-2 of Julda 100 MW power plant in Chittagong, Meghnaghat 104 MW power plant, Madhumati 100 MW power plant in Bagerhat and 150 MW power plant in Sylhet 225 MW upgraded Combined Bicycle Power Plant It is upgraded from 150 MW.

According to Power Ministry sources, since taking power in 2009, the government has successfully constructed 119 power plants with a generating capacity of 20,293 MW.

It said the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had set a target of generating 24,000 MW of electricity by 2021. But the target has already been exceeded.

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid said the power generation capacity has now reached 25,235 MW (including captive power) which was only 4,942 MW in 2009.

He said that due to the courageous and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, we have been able to bring about 99.5 percent of the population under the power facility.

Nasrul Hamid said the Awami League-led government has achieved tremendous success in the power sector in the last 12 years and has given priority to the importance of this sector in the overall development of the country.

He added that due to the sincere and relentless efforts of the government, the per capita power generation has reached 560 KW, which was only 220 kW in 2009 and the system loss has come down to 6.49 percent from 14.33 per cent.
