Though the two city corporations of the capital are working to control Aedes mosquitoes, dengue is not coming under control. 5345 people have been infected in the first 19 days of this month. A total of 7,698 people were infected last month. The number of infected was 2,026 in July. Last June, 262 people were infected. In addition, more or less people have been infected with dengue every month this year. About 90 percent of the victims are residents of the capital Dhaka. Of these, Dhaka is more infected in the South than in the North.
Although there has been talk of Integrated Vector Management (IVM) for a long time to control dengue, in reality the two city corporations in the capital are not implementing it. As a result, the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquito is not coming under control. About two hundred patients are being infected with dengue every day in the capital. According to the government, the number of dengue patients in the country has already exceeded 15,000. Dengue has killed 59 people so far. In the last 24 hours, 241 new dengue patients have been admitted to the hospital. Of these, 184 are in the capital Dhaka. Another 58 people are being treated at hospitals in different parts of the country.
Experts said that in order to control mosquitoes, the environment must be ensured so that mosquitoes do not breed. For this, it is necessary to ensure that the surroundings of the house are clean and tidy so that water does not accumulate for more than three days. If this can be done, the mosquito control work at the source becomes 50 percent.
Touhid Uddin Ahmed, a former chief scientific officer at the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), told the media that both larvae and adult mosquitoes need to be killed. This is self-evident in mosquito control. But when the epidemic is over, the adult mosquitoes have to be brought under control first. This is because the Aedes mosquito will bite as many people as it can during its one-month lifespan. And it takes a week from larvae to be adult mosquitoes.
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), 15,701 people have been admitted to the hospital with dengue this year till 8 am on Sunday. Of these, 14,535 have been discharged from the hospital. At present, 1,107 people are undergoing treatment in various hospitals across the country. Of these, 900 people are undergoing treatment in 41 government and private hospitals in the capital.
Meanwhile, the two city corporations of the capital have continued various activities to control the dengue-carrying Aedes mosquito without spraying mosquito repellent. The owners of buildings and installations where Aedes mosquito larvae and breeding grounds are found are being fined in various amounts.
