Jahangirnagar University Day today. The country's only residential university entered its 51st year after 50 years. Jahangirnagar University started its journey on January 12, 1971 with 150 students and only four departments. Since then, January 12 has been celebrated as University Day through various events every year.
Due to the Covid pandemic, the university administration has decided to make the Jahangirnagar University Day program online in a short form. This decision has been taken considering the precautionary and overall considerations in the context of the transmission of new type of coronavirus Omicron all over the world including Bangladesh.
Jahangirnagar University, which was built in a secluded and pleasant environment of Savar near the capital, now has 34 departments and four institutes. These departments have more than seven hundred teachers and more than 15 thousand students. Six new halls will be added soon along with the previous 16 halls. These are in the final stages of construction. The concerned people think that the university will get back its residential character after the opening of the halls.
Anu Muhammad, a professor in the university's Economics department, said the university has become a kind of pro-government factory instead of new research. Although the university is supposed to play a helpful role in formulating policies on various issues of the government, it is not possible due to various obstacles. This requires transparency in the teacher recruitment process. He said there was a lack of initiative in the institutional framework as much as there should be research opportunities.
The national flag and the flag of the university will be hoisted at 10 am today on the occasion of the day. After the inaugural ceremony, a cultural program will be held by the Student Welfare and Counseling Center at 10:40 am. Cultural program will be organized by Student-Teacher Center at 11:05 am, solo performance at 11:35 am, mime performance by Rangan-Mime Academy at 11:50 am, puppet drama will be staged at 12:10 pm by Bangladesh Puppet Drama Research and Development Center.

On August 20, 1970, the then government, through an ordinance, named the Jahangirnagar Muslim University after Dhaka’s former name Jahangirnagar . Then on January 12, 1971 the Governor of East Pakistan Rear Admiral SM Ahsan officially inaugurated the University. When the University Act was passed in 1973, the name of the university was changed to Jahangirnagar University excluding Muslim.
