Government has extended the term of Mohammad Imran as India's High Commissioner by three years. On 28 February 2019, the government appointed Mohammad Imran as the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in New Delhi. The new term will be effective from February 28, 2022.
After almost a decade, a professional diplomat from Bangladesh has taken over as the High Commissioner to India. Prior to joining India, he was the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Arab Emirates.
Mohammad Imran succeeded Syed Moazzem Ali in India. Former Foreign Secretary Syed Moazzem Ali had been High Commissioner to India since September 2014 on contract. Former diplomat Tariq A. Karim was Bangladesh's High Commissioner to India from 2009 to mid-2014. He was also hired on contract.
Mohammad Imran, an officer of BCS (Foreign Cadre) 1986 batch, obtained an MBBS degree from Mymensingh Medical College. Prior to his assignment to the United Arab Emirates, he had served as Bangladesh's Ambassador to Uzbekistan. Mohammad Imran was the Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Kolkata.
After joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he had served in various capacities in Dhaka as well as in the Bangladesh Mission in Jeddah, Ottawa, Bonn and Berlin.
He was the Director General of the South Asia Desk during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's historic visit to India on January 10, 2010. Based on this visit, Bangladesh-India bilateral relations have been moving forward anew which is still ongoing.
