Five former students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have been arrested for 'giving money' to students in the anti-vice-chancellor movement.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Nisharul Arif said five students had been handed over to Jalalabad police station in Sylhet.
The arrested are Habibur Rahman Swapan, a former student of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department and Reza Noor Mueen Deep and Nazmus Shakib Dwip, former students of Architecture Department and AKM Maruf Hossain and Faisal Ahmed.
Commissioner Nisharul Arif said they had been arrested on charges of being involved in criminal activities by financing students in the anti-SUST Vice-Chancellor movement.
He said they were being questioned, adding that they were investigating on what basis they had provided the funds.
Earlier, Reza Noor Mueen's wife Jakwan Salwa Takrim told the media about the arrest that Reza had gone to Uttara Agora for shopping in the evening. He was picked up by the CID's cyber crime unit at around 7.30 pm. They later returned home to return Raza's car and reported that Reza was being taken to CID headquarters for questioning. Those who came to the house had CID stickers on their cars, said Razor's wife. She herself is a former student of SUST.
She said that as a former student of the university in this movement, I have stood by the agitators and contributed some money.
However, when contacted to CID, they said they had no information about anyone being arrested or brought in for questioning.
Incidentally, on the night of January 13 hundreds of students of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall started a movement against the Provost Jafrin Ahmed for misconduct demanding her resignation. The BCL attacked the students of the hall on Saturday evening. On Sunday, the students seized the Vice-Chancellor. Upon receiving the news, the police baton charged, fired rubber bullets and released the VC. Fifty students were injured. Since then, there has been a demand for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor Professor Fariduddin.
