SUST students withdraw movement

Dhaka: Students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) have withdrawn their movement.

After a discussion with the Education Minister at 5:30 pm on Saturday (February 12), they sat down in a meeting to discuss their next steps.

At 6:30 pm, they announced their withdrawal from the movement. At the same time, they hoped that all the demands including the main ones would be implemented as per the assurance of the Education Minister.

Mohaiminul Bashar Raj spoke on behalf of the agitators. On the other hand, acting Proctor Ishrat Ismail, Shafiul Islam and Mazhar Majumdar demanded justice for the sexual harassment of the protesting students.

The meeting started at 5:30 pm on Saturday inside the D building of the university. After the meeting, a press conference was held to announce the withdrawal of their position and movement.

SUST students have been protesting since January 16 demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Farid Uddin Ahmed. Education Minister Dr. Dipu Moni came to Sylhet on Friday to discuss with the protesters. In the meeting with the minister in the afternoon, the students made 8 point- demands and 13 recommendations.

Despite promising to accept all the demands, the Education Minister said that the main demand of the students would be to inform the Chancellor about the resignation or removal of the VC.

After a press conference at night, the agitating students announced the suspension of the program till this afternoon and said that the next decision will be taken after a meeting today.
