The search committee will meet again on Saturday to finalize the names of persons eligible for appointment as Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
This was stated by the senior secretary (coordination and reform) of the cabinet division, Dr. Shamsul Arefin.
He said the search committee will meet again next Saturday (February 19) at 11 am. Hopefully that day I will be able to talk more about this.
Asked if any of the 322 people proposed in today's meeting have been dropped, he said no decision has been taken yet.
The first meeting of the search committee was held on the afternoon of February 6. After the meeting that day, the cabinet division sent a letter to the registered political parties via email asking for their names by February 11. Only 24 political parties proposed names within the deadline. The BNP, CPB and BSD did not name anyone. Justice Obaidul Hasan asked for an extension till 5 pm on Monday to get names from these parties.
The circular said the search committee would carry out its duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022. The Cabinet Division will provide necessary secretarial assistance in the performance of the search committee.
