Dhaka University (DU) has declared posts of 13 vacant as they did not return within stipulated time after they went abroad for higher education.

The syndicate took this decision against 13 teachers on Wednesday night (February 23). It is learned that many of the teachers have voluntarily resigned from the university.

According to a source in the university, they migrated abroad for higher education before 2015. During this time they have enjoyed all the facilities of the university subject to conditions. They did not join the job even after the deadline. So the university has to repay the financial debt. The minimum amount owed is Tk. 9 lakh and the maximum is Tk. 53 lakh.

Letters will be sent to those teachers to pay back the money. Teachers seeking voluntary resignation will be accepted if they pay the university dues.

As there is a shortage of teachers in the concerned departments, new teachers will be appointed to overcome it, the source said.

Meanwhile, the university's Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman said the decision was taken through strict rules. As per the rules, those teachers were supposed to join the workplace but they did not join even after the stipulated time. So their posts have been declared vacant.
