Prime Minister calls for international commitment for dignified repatriation of Rohingyas

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called for a firm commitment from international organizations including the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to ensure the safe and dignified repatriation of Rohingyas.

The Prime Minister made this comment during a courtesy call on OIC Secretary General Hissain Brahim at Ganabhaban on Sunday (May 28).

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists.

Sheikh Hasina wished for a strong commitment from the OIC member countries to send the Rohingyas home and help them solve their problems, said that they had given shelter to the Rohingyas for humanitarian reasons and called on the OIC member countries to collect funds for the Rohingyas.

She said, there is religious harmony in Bangladesh and people are living in peace. The OIC Secretary General stated that the Rohingya issue is a priority issue for the OIC, adding that the Rohingya are deprived of their rights.

In the meeting, OIC Secretary General said that Bangladesh is an important country for OIC. Bangladesh is playing an important role in OIC. She also recalled the great contribution of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in establishing international peace.

The OIC Secretary General congratulated the Prime Minister on the 50th anniversary of Bangabandhu’s receiving the Julio Currie Peace Award for his contribution to world peace.

In the meeting, Prime Minister's Ambassador At- large Mohammad Ziauddin, Prime Minister's Principal Secretary M Tofazzel Hossain Mia and Foreign Secretary (Marine Affairs Unit) Rear Admiral (Retd.) Md. Khurshed Alam were present.

OIC Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Askar Musinov was also present.

OIC Secretary General Hisen Brahim Taha arrived in Dhaka on Saturday on a five-day visit. As Chancellor of Islamic University of Technology (IUT), he will attend the 35th convocation of IUT on May 30.
