Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said that the better life and future of the Rohingyas can be ensured only in their own country and it is better for them to return to their native land in Myanmar.
He said this while talking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (May 29).
The foreign minister said that a better future for the Rohingyas is possible only in Myanmar, not in Bangladesh. Confidence building measures are being taken. They better go back to Myanmar. Momen said, not the issues raised by the media, China's vice foreign minister has come to Bangladesh to discuss the Rohingya.
Responding to a question about China's Global Development Initiative (GDI), the foreign minister said, he (the Chinese deputy minister) was not even close to that issue. Momen said that China is helping Rohingya repatriation.
Bangladesh and China on Sunday reviewed ongoing efforts to repatriate Rohingyas in Myanmar.
The foreign minister thanked the Chinese government for making "intense efforts" for the safe and speedy repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh.
When asked when the Rohingyas will start returning to Myanmar, he said, he has no idea about any specific date.
Both foreign minister Dr. Momen and China's vice foreign minister Sun Weidong agreed that the issue needs an urgent solution, as it could develop into a real threat to regional security and stability if no further solution is found.
Momen said there is a tripartite effort. Our priority is to see the repatriation of Rohingyas. He said many Rohingyas are willing to go back and some Rohingyas have raised issues like citizenship.
On Sunday during the meeting with Momen, the deputy foreign minister of China praised the remarkable socio-economic changes of Bangladesh under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Momen said that the vice minister of China visited the Padma Bridge. He acknowledged that Bangladesh has made things possible that seemed impossible in the last 10 years. Momen praised China's significant contribution to Bangladesh's development journey.
In response to a question, Momen said that the deputy minister of China invited Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to visit China, but Dhaka informed that the Prime Minister would be in New York at that time.
