Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, a senior lawyer of the BNP-Jamaat-led Blue Panel, has been elected as the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (2024-25). Awami League-led white panel lawyer Shah Manjurul Haque became the secretary.

Out of the 14 posts, six posts including president were won by the nominees of the BNP-Jamaat-led Nationalist Lawyers Unity Panel (Blue Panel). On the other hand, candidates nominated by Awami League-led Bangabandhu Awami Lawyers Parishad (white panel) have won eight positions including secretary.

After much drama earlier, counting of votes started on Saturday (March 9) after 3 pm.

A large number of policemen were deployed at the Supreme Court premises for secured counting of votes and the announcement of results. Access to the building where votes were being counted was restricted.

In this election of the Supreme Court Bar Association of the country, 14 members of the executive committee were elected as president, two vice-presidents, secretary, treasurer, two assistant-secretaries and seven members. Total voters in this election are 7883 people while 33 candidates contested.

In the election, Awami League supported Bangabandhu Awami Lawyer Parishad (white panel) nominated Abu Saeed Sagar as president, Shah Manjurul Haq as secretary, Ramzan Ali Shikder and Dewan Md. Abu Obaid Hossain Setu as vice-presidents, Mohammad Nurul Huda Ansari as treasurer, in the two positions of assistant secretaries Humayun Kabir and Mohammad Humayun Kabir were candidates.

In addition, seven members Mohammad Khalekuzzaman Bhuiyan, Mahmuda Afroz, Md. Belal Hossain, Khaled Mosharraf, Md. Raihan Roni, Soumitra Sardar and Rashedul Haque Khokon contested.

On the other hand, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin (Khokon) from BNP-backed Nationalist Lawyers Oikya Panel (Blue Panel) as president, Barrister Md. Ruhul Quddus as secretary, Vice Presidents Humayun Kabir and Sarkar Tahmina Begum, treasurer- Rezaul Karim, Mahfuzur Rahman and Md. Abdul Karim as assistant secretaries. Apart from seven members, Fatima Akhtar, Syed Fazle Elahi, Md. Shafiqul Islam Shafiq, Md. Russell Ahmed, Md. Ashikuzzaman Nazrul, Mohiuddin Hanif and Md. Ibrahim Khalil became the candidate.

Outside the white and blue panel, Advocate Md. Yunus Ali Akhand is the candidate for the post of president. Advocate Md. Khalilur Rahman Bablu (MK Rahman). Advocate Farhad Uddin Ahmed Bhuiyan and Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi were candidates for the post of secretary. For the post of treasurer Md. Saiful Islam was in the fray.
