Dr. Dick Durbin, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee of the upper house of the US Congress, called for an end to the harassment against Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

He made this call in a meeting with Bangladesh Ambassador Mohammad Imran in Washington on Wednesday (March 13) local time.

Posting a photo of the meeting with Ambassador Mohammad Imran on his X handle, Senator Durbin wrote, "The United States values the long-standing relationship with Bangladesh." I appreciate Bangladesh for helping Rohingya refugees. But failure to end the reprisals against Dr. Yunus could have a negative impact on the partnership between the two countries.

Earlier, Ambassador Mohammad Imran met Dick Durbin, Chairman of the Legislative Affairs Committee of the Democratic Party of the United States elected from Illinois, in his office.

Meanwhile, a circular issued by the Senator's office said that Professor Yunus faced more than a hundred cases in Bangladesh for more than a decade; which could not be proved. Hundreds of Nobel laureates including former US President Barack Obama have condemned the harassment campaign against Professor Yunus. In recognition of his leading contribution in the fight against poverty around the world, the US Congress Awarded Congressional Gold Medal to Dr. Yunus; Dick Durbin spearheaded the award initiative.

In a discussion with Ambassador Mohammad Imran, Dick Durbin said that the United States values long-standing relations with Bangladesh. I commend Bangladesh for providing basic assistance to Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar. But the apparent failure to end the personal vendetta against Dr. Muhammad Yunus could have a negative impact on the partnership between the two countries. Therefore, in today's meeting, I once again called for an end to the harassment of Professor Yunus.
